/what-is-a-fractional-executive

A fractional executive, explained without the pitch.

A senior leader who holds a real seat in your company for part of their week, accountable for a function rather than a deliverable. The model is not new: fractional finance and marketing leadership have existed for decades.

Definitions

Four words used interchangeably, and wrongly.

Fractional
Ongoing, part-time, accountable for a function. Usually a set number of days a month, for as long as the seat is needed.
Interim
Full-time but temporary, holding a vacant seat until a permanent hire starts. A different job with a different end state.
Advisor
A few hours a month of counsel, with no authority and no ownership. Valuable, but it will not fix a delivery problem.
Consultant
Engaged for a defined study or project, accountable for the deliverable rather than the function.
How common it has become
60,000 to 120,000 in two years.
Published figures put fractional leadership at roughly 60,000 professionals in 2022 and 120,000 in 2024, with demand for fractional finance leadership alone reported to have more than doubled year on year.
Where it goes wrong
An executive with nobody to implement.
The common failure is not the seniority of the person. It is hiring a decision-maker into a company with no capacity to act on the decisions, then judging the model by the result.

Still deciding? Start with the assessment.

One week, fixed fee, written findings, and a straight answer about which model you actually need. Including the answer that it is not us.
